Dunkirk — A tense film you should definitely see on the big screen — 9*/10

As war movies go, there isn't all that much fighting and almost no blood, but you'd need a chainsaw to cut the tension. It's perfection on many levels, if that's the style you're looking for.

Incredibly well done by Christopher Nolan, but he has no idea how movies are going to live in the future. Those who have a great visual will continue to draw people to the cinema, but the rest will be streamed.

As a side note, IMAX or 70mm formats are probably worth the investment.

The Founder — A fascinating story lead by a single person — 8*/10

It's all about Michael Keaton and his great performance. I mean the story is very interesting and well put together, but what really makes it come alive and make it this captivating is his performance. I highly recommend seeing it.

Hidden Figures — An inspiring historic film about black women in technology — 9*/10

Crisp, well-told story with a good dose of entertainment, especially through the humor, but also through character development and a bit of tension. Highly recommended.

Hacksaw Ridge — An amazingly well-told story of World War II — 9*/10

• Overall: Much better than the previews let on. A captivating story from end to end. A superb work by director Mel Gibson.
• Who is it for? Anyone not afraid of violence.

• Known actors: Andrew Garfield, Hugo Weaving, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington.
• Setting: Working class America and one World War II Pacific island battle.
• Style: An inspiring war movie and biography.
• Pacing: Nice and smooth transition from one event to the other, slowly cranking up the heat.
• Intro: It's probably its most grievous weakness. The initial scene is an overused stratagem that is not used to its best here.
• Story: I was riveted. I forgot I was in a theater. Let me be clear, though, all the elements of a cheesy story are there, but they're deconstructed, or maybe I should simply say they were put back together for the benefit of the preview. In a way it's a good thing, because by watching the it, you're not spoiled the really delicious elements. No single things follow the usual script, they're always a wild card or . It's touching, it's gut wrenching, it will make you spill a few tears. It's inspiring.
• Ending: Solid. Worthy of fiction.
• Epilogue: One of the rare occasions where I didn't mind the comparison with the real people.
• Dialogs: Great.
• Characters: Amazing. Great depth and well rendered. Even though the main character is religious, it doesn't turn into a preachy flick. More than that, even though those are American troops, it doesn't turn into a USA rally. It's a personal story. The story of one man dedicated to his principles and the battalion he's in with.
• Acting: Can't ask for more. Near perfect.
• Visuals: Excellent.
• Special Effects: They're good, but there are a number of occasions that you do feel that you are in a studio. Hugo Weaving’s best performance to date. Probably not Vince Vaughn's most convincing, but pretty good.
• Afterthoughts: I wasn't going to see it because it looked preachy and full of clichés. I would have missed a gem.

Braveheart — It captured the imagination then and it still does now — 9*/10

• Overall: Epic medieval story by actor-director Mel Gibson that will easily transport you. 
• Who is it for? Anyone wanting to watch a grandiose story. Short attention spans should abstain, because it is very long and develops slowly. It is also quite violent.

• Cameos: Brian Cox.
• Setting: Grubby, dirty medieval England and Scotland.
• Style: Gritty sometimes gory folk hero war story with a side of romance. Lots of different elements make for a complete tale.
• Pacing: There are multiple culmination points and multiple paces to the storytelling which gathered together build a great narration. It is quite long, almost three hours.
• Intro: Slowly sets the tone and immerses us in the story.
• Story: It has a lot to tell and it takes its time to do it. Full of action, battles, angry Scots and some romance, it is no wonder it was such a success and it is still now a cultural reference.
• Ending: Gripping. Gut wrenching.
• Epilogue: Could have done without it, although it is pretty moving.
• Dialogs: Well rendered.
• Characters: They all have very palpable personality. As you get to know each of them, you get to understand each of them without a doubt.
• Acting: Superb.
• Visuals: Beautiful in a gritty way. The film is getting old and you can see it, but you can still appreciate the quality.
• Special Effects: Only a few disappointing mishaps that you usually only see on subsequent watch.
• Costumes: Excellent designs, very realistic.
• Score: Gripping, grandiose.

Concussion — The talent of Ridley Scott and Will Smith shining — 8*/10

• Story: Only the brilliance of Ridley Scott could possibly make it that interesting. The details are interesting and the technical aspects are done perfectly, but it is by no means thrill ride. There's a limit to what one can do with this story without distorting it.
• Setting: An incredible discovery of major importance for football and any other contact sport.
• Style: Like other historical or biographical flick, this one is simple and without any punch.
• Pacing: Solid.
• Dialogs: Excellent.
• Characters: You really get to know them well and they are well developed.
• Acting: I think this is one of the major reasons for this movie to be this good.
• Known actors: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks, Paul Reiser and Luke Wilson.

• Who is it for? Scott and Smith fans or those looking for something quiet, yet relevant and are interesting in seeing this case with human faces.

Pride — Funny representation of the meeting of two very different world — 8*/10

• Story: Very interesting, compelling and inspiring. Lots of funny moments as well as a bit of simmering drama that doesn't turn into an enormity.
• Style: Biographical and historical, so, at times, it lacks a bit of punch.
• Ending: Nice, but as anything else based on real events, it kind of sputters out even if there's a bit of surprise.
• Dialogs: Sometimes witty, sometimes funny, but always to the point.
• Characters: Interesting, diverse, well built and nicely fleshed out.
• Acting: Solid.
• Known actors: Bill Nighy.

• Who is it for? Those who like well done historical portrayals with a bit of humor.

Pawn Sacrifice — A very strong biography of a troubled genius — 8*/10

• Story: His tortured soul really comes through and it can be a bit difficult to watch. However, there is no denying the strength of this movie. The story is a bit simple. The psychology is incredible. Very claustrophobic.
• Ending: It's a biographical piece, so you can't ask for much.
• Dialogs: Strong.
• Characters: Very realistic.
• Acting: Powerful on all accounts.
• Known actors: Tobey Maguire, Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard.

• Entertainment value: Good if you're interested characters with psychological troubles.
• Who is it for? Those looking for biographies or psychological flicks and Maguire fans.

Elvis & Nixon — It is farcical and very difficult to get a good feeling for — 7*/10

• Story: I thought it was going to be much more funny, but it's serious most of the time. The thing is that too many elements turns around things that are certainly artistic interpretations, so the mix of funny and serious doesn't work for me.
• Pacing: It seems to go by fits and spurts. You get settled in a certain way and it changes on you. You get settled again and it changes again. Multiple times.
• Ending: As any true story, it's kind of boring, but that's why we have fictional works.
• Characters: Interesting interpretations. If I had to imagine Nixon, I would imagine him like that, exactly. Not true for Elvis, he seems unreal, too plastic. That being said, I think the those interpretations are definitively the cornerstone of this film and make it as good as it can be.
• Acting: Very good, for the most part. This also a key element of this flick.
• Known actors: Kevin Spacey, Michael Shannon and Colin Hanks.

• Who is it for? Those intrigued by this little factual piece of history, but I'm not sure. Not really for me. Maybe, I'm just not catching stuff on the third degree.
