Suburbicon — This twisted little tale with delight some and bore others — 8*/10

This is not for everyone. This piece by George Clooney is excellent, but a lot of people might think it weird and too low key. The story is solid, the acting great and the plot gets thicker with each passing moment. Great ending.

Matt Damon, Julianne Moore

The Foreigner — Solid action movie — 6*/10

I have to say that the premise feels weak and forced, with almost any other subject it would have felt better. That being said, the acting is great, the action realistic, the intrigue interesting and the tension solid.

Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan.

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women — A compelling romance — 8*/10

It's simply told, but the story itself is anything but, even today. It presents kinky and non-monogamous relationships for the whole world to see and, more importantly, to understand. It doesn't go in depth, but it definitely is compelling. It doesn't contain any action, but it doesn't have any flaws either. A quiet strong romance. A solid biography.

Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote.

Blade Runner 2049 — It's simply mind-blowing, see it — 10*/10

I don't understand how critics can give it a bad review. Unless you don't like long movies or anything to do with sci-fi, you have to at least be entertained.

In this master piece by Denis Villeneuve, produced by Ridley Scott, mood is everything. Yes, there are long scenes where few things happen, but so what, it's delicious if you stop to enjoy it.

It's close to perfection. Just see it. In IMAX, because the sound and the visual are spectacular. Avoid 3D.

Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Ana de Armas and Jared Leto.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1856101/

American Made — Excellent and very entertaining biographical movie — 9*/10

Superb photography, great development, perfect acting and extremely interesting story with a solidly made ending. It's crazy, without much violence or any bloodbath. Most people will love it.

Tom Cruise.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3532216/

The LEGO Ninjago Movie — Good but disappointing — 6*/10

To my taste, it contains too many real elements, or I should say some elements from the real world are too present onscreen. I think it breaks the mood. Plus, there are too many long speeches.

That being said, I think it's funny and entertaining.

Jackie Chan, Dave Franco, Fred Armisen and Michael Peña.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle — Good, but not as good as the first one — 7*/10

Although several of the ideas that make this new chapter are good, some aren't and the novelty has worn off. The first one (read my review here) was a little bit more fleshed out and surprising. This one is just flashy. Still, it's good entertainment.

Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, Elton John and Jeff Bridges.

It — Very interesting story and technically solid horror flick — 8*/10

This is the kind of horror movie I like. It doesn’t scare the shit out of you, it's not gory, it's super interesting with lots of nice details, you can't tell who's going to die when, with a few exceptions, you have a strong female member of the group, and a bunch of kids who give a solid cohesive performance.

mardi 19 septembre 2017

American Assassin — A great mix of super spy and real spy movie genres — 7*/10

It has the decisions and complications of a real spy thriller with the action and lone hero specs of a super spy flick. It does come with a few noticeable flaws, but it's still a very entertaining result.

Michael Keaton and Sanaa Lathan.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1961175/

mardi 12 septembre 2017

Despicable Me 3 — Pretty funny, better than the second one — 7*/10

Funny, hilarious at time, with lots of great details and many throwbacks to the 80s, it's definitely a better sequel to the original (read my review here) than the second one. If you like that universe, it's a no-brainer.

Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig.

Wind River — A powerful drama with a very interesting investigation — 10*/10

This movie won't leave anybody indifferent. Touching, sometimes in a harsh way with a reality that needs to be put to light. Surprising, shocking, and with unusual script decisions.

A must.

Elizabeth Olsen, Kelsey Asbille, Jeremy Renner, Julia Jones, Graham Greene and Jon Bernthal.

Logan Lucky — Great entertainment for those looking for an easy one — 8*/10

It might not be a masterpiece, but Steven Soderbergh created something almost perfect. It lacks the punch, visceral, mental or visual to attract the crowds, but I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Great acting and a very interesting story with a bit of intrigue make for sweet entertainment anyone can enjoy.

Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Riley Keough, Katie Holmes and Seth MacFarlane.

The Hitman's Bodyguard — Beyond your average action comedy flick — 8*/10

Excellent entertainment, to say the least. It's funny, full of action and, surprisingly, even a few soulful moments. Solid acting and a nice, if simple, scenario makes this an easy choice for anyone.

Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Elodie Yung and Salma Hayek.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1959563/

mardi 15 août 2017

The Dark Tower — A very entertaining mix of sci-fi and fantasy — 7*/10

I liked it. It's not great, it feels like it didn't fulfill its potential, but it has many things that are interesting. The background ideas, the worlds themselves and the characters are captivating. The story is nice if simple. The action is well done, the special effects solid, and there are a few bold choices not to be dismissed.

Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1648190/

mardi 8 août 2017

Dunkirk — A tense film you should definitely see on the big screen — 9*/10

As war movies go, there isn't all that much fighting and almost no blood, but you'd need a chainsaw to cut the tension. It's perfection on many levels, if that's the style you're looking for.

Incredibly well done by Christopher Nolan, but he has no idea how movies are going to live in the future. Those who have a great visual will continue to draw people to the cinema, but the rest will be streamed.

As a side note, IMAX or 70mm formats are probably worth the investment.

Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets — Astoundingly beautiful and exciting sci-fi — 10*/10

I'll only denounce the "love is stronger than everything" and monogamy ideas. Beyond that it's perfect. Amazing intrigue, action, story... It's just mind-blowing. One of the best 3D I've ever seen, but not necessary. A masterpiece by Luc Besson.

Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rutger Hauer and John Goodman.

mardi 1 août 2017

Atomic Blonde — Be ready for a great spy action film — 10*/10

Great selection of 80s music, sometimes remixed. The best of the 80s fashion without any of its faux pas. Compact realistic (to a point) action. Amazingly entertaining and captivating story with only a few predictable elements, but themselves often twisted.

Charlize Theron, Sofia Boutella, James McAvoy, John Goodman and Eddie Marsan.

dimanche 30 juillet 2017

War for the Planet of the Apes — A solid post apocalypse movie — 7*/10

For a flick with "War" in its title, there isn't much of it or action for that matter. However, like its two predecessors, in this reboot there is a strong sense of finality to it, strong emotional perspectives, as well as dirty, raw animosity, so you could say this is a proud continuation in the name of this franchise and I would agree.

The only thing I didn't like is that they introduced a comic relief element that clashes too strongly with this film and the two previous. Beyond that, great acting, solid special effects and powerful camera shots will entertain you without any issue.

Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Judy Greer.

mercredi 19 juillet 2017

Spider-Man: Homecoming — A solid reboot of the franchise — 8*/10

The whole Happy-Stark-Parker thing is a bit annoying. The story is pretty involved with lots of stuff happening, but low-key for a superhero flick, at least we didn't go through the origin once more. Good action and special effects if, again, low-key. Overall, nice feeling to it and solid entertainment, one of the good Spider-Man. Watch out for those scenes during the end credits and after.

At first, I wasn't happy about the choice of actor for Spidey when I found out in the Avengers, but now I think he's great, perfect even. The perfect balance of humble, witty and courageous. Loved the choice of aunt May. Nice change there.

One very bad thing, though: no spider sense at all!

Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr.,

Transformers: The Last Knight — On the level with the rest — 6*/10

If you want to see the Transformers, you'll be served. Michael Bay kept it on the level. However, I don't like it when the rewrite "history" and make it all about the Transformers. It's even worst when they rewrite the movie history. That being said, it's fun and entertaining.

Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Anthony Hopkins, Josh Duhamel, Stanley Tucci and John Turturro.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3371366/

Baby Driver — Solid car action flick — 8*/10

It's a movie for car chase lovers. Great tempo, tight action, well built nicely acted characters (if simple), good visuals, delicious dialogs, and very interesting story (if not complex).

Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Lily James, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx.

Cars 3 — Get your Pixar fix with this fun animation — 6*/10

Good solid entertainment. Overall, touching, plus, even though the story was in a way very easy and safe for the creators, it still had a few surprises and many great details. Not the equal of the first one, but pretty interesting.

Owen Wilson, Chris Cooper and Nathan Fillion.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3606752/

The Mummy — Good fantasy with nice action — 6*/10

Very interesting ideas, but with a bad start and a number of weaknesses in the last third of the movie. Mostly, though, it is nicely entertaining and interesting. Funny, but too serious to really connect with the original precursor series (read my review of the first chapter here).

Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2345759/

Wonder Woman — An inspiring super hero action flick for all — 8*/10

Amazing visuals, action and special effects. The story is very interesting even if it's not very complex. The part about rewriting Greek mythology is annoying, the bad guy is weak at best and they could have given her one of the more dressed-up version of her costume, but the rest, including the acting, is great.

Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright and Connie Nielsen.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — Entertaining if nothing else — 6*/10

The 5th chapter. Atrocious intro and epilogue. The rest of the story is pretty good even though there are a number of easy or flawed things. Entertaining and with some good special effects. Beware, post credit scene.

Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Javier Bardem, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

Captain Underpants — You'll see it for your kids, but you'll enjoy yourself too — 6*/10

Simple, yet witty and full of interesting details. You will not find many layered levels of comedy, but you will chuckle at things your kid won't understand. Plus, the story is pretty positive.

Kevin Hart.

Baywatch — The previews are better than the movie — 5*/10

Alien: Covenant — Oh, it just gets so creepy... Loved it — 8*/10

Welcome back to the real creepiness of the Alien world. The overall sense of never being safe is finally truly back. Gotta love it.

Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup and Danny McBride (finally showing us his acting skills).

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2316204/

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword — A fantasy fix that's really cheap — 5*/10

Sorry, but the end result is really lame. With the money spent on it, it's a shame. The only good things are the special effects.

Ghost in the Shell — A great sci-fi that sadly departs from the original — 8*/10

I prefer the original, because of the story, the introspection and the soundtrack. So, I'm very much biased. I also don't like the posture and the walk they gave her, too hunched back, too robotic.

The departure from the original is understandable, but sad. So is the loss of the moody soundtrack. Still, we got to hear it once more during the end credits.

Don't watch it in 3D. I unfortunately had too and I would very want to see it again on the big screen in 2D to fully appreciate and get a second, maybe less biased, opinion.

That being said, it's a solid movie with a good story and intrigue. I just don't have the perspective to say if it's great.

Scarlett Johansson and Juliette Binoche.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219827/

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — A great sci-fi epic — 8*/10

Solid fun full of action, mean special effects and great vistas. A few weaknesses, but overall very entertaining.

Keep on watching the credits. There are many clips throughout until the very end.

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone and Vin Diesel.

Their Finest — A well-rounded comedy with some itty-bitty romance — 8*/10

This is a movie to be proud of. It's funny, interesting, with a strong female role, many witty repartee, a surprising ending and solid acting. Go see it, it's well worth it.

Gemma Arterton, Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Richard E. Grant and Jeremy Irons.

Gifted — If you're not looking for action you should see this — 8*/10

It's beautiful, touching with quite a bit of wit. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something sentimental. However, it does have two major flaws.

One, it pounds in the gimmick that love conquers all, which in real life never happens because it's not true. If it happens it's because of something else.

Two, in life, things are never this black or white. It's always gray. If you assume things are black or white and you see yourself as being the good person, automatically the other person is bad and nothing could ever be further from the truth.

Mckenna Grace (watch out for her in the future, she's going to be a great actress), Chris Evans, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer.

The Boss Baby — Turn your brain off and be ready to laugh! — 6*/10

Be open to simple silliness, caricatural behavior and an alternate reality type animation and you'll be really entertained. Very funny. It doesn't take itself seriously and you shouldn't either. Nice ending. Enjoy it.

Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow and Tobey Maguire.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3874544/

Going in Style — Very light very entertaining comedy worth your time — 7*/10

Very funny, with some nice touching moments. High entertainment with very little flaws. I highly recommend it if you want to have some light fun without asking your brain too much.

Ann-Margret, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin, Christopher Lloyd and Matt Dillon.

T2 Trainspotting — Doesn't punch like the first one, but still well worth it — 8*/10

If you haven't seen the first chapter (read my review here), then don't see it, you won't understand a thing. For the other, don't expect as much a punch in the face as the first one, and you'll be very happy to have seen it. I'll say the mellowing out is logical and is perfectly well done and well adapted to the story. Enjoy!

Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle.

Power Rangers — It's only a teen sci-fi action flick, no more — 5*/10

I guess I was expecting too much and was disappointed. The reboot is not bad considering the comics weren't very good to start with. Nice action, nice ideas, just a bit overly simple.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3717490/

mardi 28 mars 2017

CHIPS — A very entertaining action comedy worth seeing — 6*/10

It doesn't take itself seriously and only has minimal resemblance to the TV series. The injected silliness is priceless and makes it a good flick to have some brainless down time.

Michael Peña, Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell and Vincent D'Onofrio.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493405/

Wilson — The wacky edge of this flick hides some cutting emotional depth — 7*/10

It's all about being satisfied, turning the page, moving on. It let's us think about our lives through his. It's his life and his shortcomings. It's simple, slow, unusual, silly, wacky, funny, but, weirdly, emotionally stark in many ways.

Judy Greer, Laura Dern and Cheryl Hines.

Woody Harrelson shows great range with this role.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1781058/

The Sense of an Ending — A quiet little drama that sums up our lives — 7*/10

Our history is a story we tell ourselves, and this movie really makes us see it. There are a few annoying things, but overall, it's well made. Slow and entertaining.

Before I Fall — This little flick is slick and has a lot of heart — 7*/10

The societal slice is just too high and the settings too slick, but it's very interesting and the just of it at the right place. Even if it's not really anything new, it's really nice to watch and let go.

Kong: Skull Island — An amazing sci-fi full of spectacular action and great special effects — 9*/10

It blew my mind. I wasn't expecting much and I got a plateful of fun. Great intro and amazing fight scenes. Even though the story is rather simple, it is extremely well told. I might not have liked the evil monster, but the other ones were great. Nice imagination there.

Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly and John Goodman.

Table 19 — Easy to watch and enjoy comedy — 7*/10

It's a low-key kind of funny semi romantic flick. Well acted and with a few surprises even if it seems like it's playing an old tune. Last two scenes of the epilogue are very funny.

Anna Kendrick, Lisa Kudrow and Craig Robinson.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1412528/

mercredi 8 mars 2017

Logan — Very disappointed because it had so much potential — 6*/10

The acting is good as far as Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart are concerned, since there were given solid parts. The other characters are much weaker and it's difficult to give a respectable performance with low grade roles.

It's too bad, because there are a few concept ideas that were pretty interesting. Unfortunately, there was no substance behind it all. Just easy stuff, except for a few things that did show a little bit of guts.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3315342/

mardi 28 février 2017

A Cure for Wellness — An old-style horror crafted in a modern way — 8*/10

It's a horror film only as far as there are a few horrifying things, mostly psychological. It does, however, have an old horror type feel to it, like something you know is there, without getting any real evidence of it, ever.

The structure of the flick is amazing, incredible craft. It is captivating, even though at some point it falls flat, using too well-traveled roads, but it picks up again for a solid ending. Slow. Not for everyone. Excellent work by Gore Verbinski.

Celia Imrie.

La Vénus à la fourrure — Puissant film qui mérite toute notre attention — 9*/10

mercredi 8 février 2017

The Space Between Us — A very nice semi sci-fi semi-romantic story — 7*/10

The relationship between the boy and the girl is very well done, but the rest is spotty at best and the science fiction a mere background, often faulty. It is easy to enjoy, and it's good light entertainment.

Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Carla Gugino and Gary Oldman.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3922818/

mardi 7 février 2017

Julieta — Strong and extremely well done drama, but not for everyone — 8*/10

This is a technically strong movie by director Pedro Almodóvar with only one real drawback, it takes a long time to get into it. The mood is so involved, it is emotionally complex to connect to and difficult to relate to the characters.

Once you're in, though, you completely forget about the rest and just want to know the depth of it all.

Excellent. I highly recommend it to those with the patience to afford it.

The Comedian — Big names, good jokes, but little else — 6*/10

It falls flat, even though the comedy bits are good. It doesn't get any steam. The romance isn't engaging beyond the initial few minutes. The life intricacies aren't significant and barely register.

Robert De Niro, Leslie Mann, Danny DeVito, Harvey Keitel, Charles Grodin, Cloris Leachman and Lucy DeVito.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople — Simple yet very surprising — 8*/10

This is about life, about defining family, about freedom, but all done in a very light yet realistic tone. Follow their adventure and all the surprises that come before during and after it. This movie's most compelling points are the fact that it takes unexpected turns and how it can still be fun even considering everything that's happening.

It's a must try, even if it's not a blockbuster. You'll probably love it.

Sam Neill and Rhys Darby.

Horns — A fantasy flick that's all about a murder mystery — 8*/10

This might not be a blockbuster, but it's a very good flick. It's a lot fun, not in a comedy sense, but in a satisfactory sense. Nice fantasy stuff, nice intrigue, nice music and a captivating story.

Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple and Heather Graham.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1528071/

The Founder — A fascinating story lead by a single person — 8*/10

It's all about Michael Keaton and his great performance. I mean the story is very interesting and well put together, but what really makes it come alive and make it this captivating is his performance. I highly recommend seeing it.

Michael Keaton, Nick Offerman, John Carroll Lynch, Laura Dern and Patrick Wilson.

iBoy — A simple yet really entertaining sci-fi flick — 8*/10

This is the kind of movie where most of the characters don't act according to the usual mold. That's refreshing and it makes for an entertaining story eve if it's a simple one. I also love the basic background idea, even though it's totally nonsensical.

If you're looking for some good and easy to enjoy, this is it.

A Netflix original.

20th Century Women — A powerful and uplifting movie about the reality of women — 9*/10

Slow and so well constructed. Extremely interesting. You can't help but smile and root for those women and that boy. Excellent feminist view port. It's emotionally complex, but it's not a downward drag. On the contrary, it's kind of inspiring.

Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig.

Monster Trucks — Nice little sci-fi for the whole family — 6*/10

Funny, light, entertaining and better than expected. Still, it's a bit more for the children. I liked the creature design, but that pink stuff, really? Great ideas, just too young.

Danny Glover (small role).

Sing — Great animation film fun for all — 8*/10

It's easy to love this flick. As adults, there are a myriad of great little jokes and some awesome music. It's even touching. As a kid, it's full of silly stuff and bright colors, although some might shed a tear or two. No worries, though, it's very positive. A must for the family.

Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson and John C. Reilly.

Focus — A nice little romantic comedy about con artists — 7*/10

Being a movie about con, you expect con everywhere. The thing is, it's never where you think it is. That's good. However, as a script, it doesn't take any risk, although the cons are nice. If you don't look for them too much, you'll see them. That being, it's entertaining and has a nice little fun romance thrown in the mix.

Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Adrian Martinez.

A Monster Calls — A beautiful fantasy tale about a hard emotional time — 9*/10

Not an easy tale. Very touching and emotional. However, it is not a damaging tale, it will not drag you down into darkness and leave you there. It is compelling, captivating and extremely well told with great visuals, especially those side stories.

Lewis MacDougall, Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson.

Hidden Figures — An inspiring historic film about black women in technology — 9*/10

Crisp, well-told story with a good dose of entertainment, especially through the humor, but also through character development and a bit of tension. Highly recommended.

Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monáe, Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons and Mahershala Ali.

Silence — Only for the Christians and the religious-minded — 6*/10

Long and heavy. I generally recognize the genius of Martin Scorsese, but this movie wasn't for me. I just could not connect.

Assassin's Creed — There's very little good to say about it — 5*/10

  • Overall: Action, special effects, interesting ideas, but nothing else. It seems more like a setup for what follows than a real movie.
  • Who is it for? Those who really feel like they should see it.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt2094766/
  • Known actors: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Michael Kenneth Williams.
  • Cameos: Brendan Gleeson.
  • Style: Action flick that can't really pick a style.
  • Pacing: Crap.
  • Intro: Interesting, probably the best part since the background idea is the best part of this flick.
  • Story: It would have been much better if they had simply chosen a time period to tell the story in. As they did it, you don't get attached to anything and it feels like an intro to the next chapter.
  • Ending: Not really an ending. Almost boring.
  • Epilogue: They had to show it kept on going or else this movie would have been a complete waste of time.
  • Dialogs: Weak, at best.
  • Characters: Really, really simple.
  • Acting: Solid. Probably one of its saving grace.
  • Visuals: Solid.
  • Special Effects: Perfect.
  • Afterthoughts: I wasn't expecting much, but I was still disappointed.

Underworld: Blood Wars — Good, but like some others it isn't very innovative — 6*/10

  • Overall: After the first Underworld (read my review here), the others were really redundant. They keep talking about the same thing over and over again. It gets even a bit boring, but it's full of action.
  • Who is it for? Those looking for more of the same are in luck.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt3717252/
  • Known actors: Kate Beckinsale.
  • Style: Dark vampire-werewolf action.
  • Pacing: Too quick. Too many of the things you need to assimilate are over in the blink of an eye. You have no time to really feel them.
  • Intro: Being a follow-up chapter in a long list, you really need the background to understand the situation. Beyond that, it's dull.
  • Story: Simple and very linear, but it does have a lot of content. Too much to be well processed given the editing. Loved the Northern coven idea, a definite high point.
  • Ending: Well, it is what it is. On par with the story.
  • Epilogue: Well, they had to open the door to the next chapter, hadn't they?
  • Dialogs: Simple.
  • Characters: Simple.
  • Acting: Good, actually this is one of the two best aspects of this flick.
  • Visuals: Pretty.
  • Special Effects: This is the second thing that's any good.
  • Costumes: Great.
  • Afterthoughts: Could have been better. Could have been worst (and some of the other movies of the franchise have been). I wasn't too disappointed and I was entertained.

Underworld — A good dark vampire versus werewolves action film — 7*/10

  • Overall: This is the kind of flick that's easy to like and be entertained by. Lots of good things, few weak ones.
  • Who is it for? Anyone looking for some action, vampires or werewolves.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320691/
  • Known actors: Kate Beckinsale, Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy.
  • Style: Dark vampire-werewolf action.
  • Pacing: Quite fast with a few pauses. Very good.
  • Intro: Good. Narrated monologue.
  • Story: Lots of action, a nice little intrigue, some betrayals, a few reversals and romance. Everything you need to keep things interesting.
  • Ending: Abrupt. Although it had been going on for a little while, the finishing touch kind of comes too easily.
  • Epilogue: Short. A few words, a few images. Just right.
  • Dialogs: Simple, but interesting.
  • Characters: Well built, with nice complexities, but without enough depth.
  • Acting: Surprisingly solid, although there are two exceptions. The character of Kraven is overplayed, I think, and the one of Michael Corvin is played too weakly, you can't really feel him.
  • Visuals: Love the dark look. Grimy for the werewolves, sleek and chic for the vampires.
  • Special Effects: Great, but you can see a few minor imperfections, now. It used to be amazing.
  • Costumes: Great.
  • Afterthoughts: Although it has a lot of strengths, with the exception of one actor, this film actually feels as good as it could have been and I'm not sure why. I think it's a combination of that actor, the characters and the ending.

The Dark Knight — The best Batman movie ever made to date — 9*/10

  • Overall: For its grit and realism, it is definitely great work by Christopher Nolan. There are some genius things and a few weaker things. It's all about the Joker.
  • Who is it for? Those looking for a psychotic realistic version of Gotham.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/
  • Known actors: Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.
  • Setting: DC Comics universe, in a realistic version.
  • Style: Dark action superhero.
  • Story: Very detailed and captivating with many successive plots. There are a few good risks that were taken, many action scenes, solid Joker moments. Realistic. Dark.
  • Ending: Amazingly good, thanks to the Joker.
  • Epilogue: It's not a waste of time and it's short.
  • Dialogs: The Joker's are great, the rest, not so much.
  • Characters: Here, the Joker is the top dog. The rest lack depth and usually fall into some form of stereotypes or other, especially the bad guys. Batman isn't so bad, but why do they have to make his voice so gravely all the time?
  • Acting: My hat goes to the Joker, once again. A royal performance, the best since Nicholson (read my review here), maybe even better. Others are pretty solid too, no complaints here.
  • Visuals: Realistic.
  • Special Effects: Great.
  • Afterthoughts: I saw it multiple times and still see the jewel, although personally, I don't like the stark realistic look and some of the stereotypes.

Iron Man 2 — A very worthy sequel to a solid superhero film — 8*/10

  • Overall: It's rare you see a second chapter as good as the first one (read my review here). Another touchdown by director-actor Jon Favreau.
  • Who is it for? Anyone who even remotely likes superhero flick. It's great sci-fi too.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1228705/
  • Known actors: Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Jon Favreau, Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson and Paul Bettany.
  • Cameos: Kate Mara, Leslie Bibb, Clark Gregg, John Slattery, DJ AM, Stan Lee and Elon Musk.
  • Setting: Marvel universe.
  • Style: Superhero action fun.
  • Pacing: Intense.
  • Story: Here, we can feel the more anti-hero side of Tony Stark. It's still a light action flick, but with a slightly darker edge. The comical part comes more from his business nemesis who pulls us in a different direction giving us a multi-tiered challenged.
  • Ending: The final touch is a bit easy.
  • Epilogue: The usual.
  • Dialogs: Witty, intelligent and well done, except for the Russian bad guy. Personally, I think they made him just a bit too inarticulate.
  • Characters: Well developed and with nice depth, especially for a superhero flick. The Russian bad guy again draws the short straw and gets heavily stereotyped.
  • Acting: Great.
  • Visuals: Nice.
  • Special Effects: Great.
  • Afterthoughts: Excellent entertainment. Very surprised at the evenness of the quality.

The Avengers — The best superhero movie ever made — 10*/10

  • Overall: Incredible action, great story, excellent characters, full of jokes and spectacular special effects. A masterwork by the amazing Joss Whedon.
  • Who is it for? Anyone, unless you truly hate the genre.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0848228/
  • Known actors: Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson.
  • Cameos: Gwyneth Paltrow and Paul Bettany.
  • Setting: Marvel universe.
  • Style: Superhero action fun.
  • Pacing: Intense.
  • Intro: Action packed.
  • Story: Huge action, complex, detailed and highly entertaining.
  • Ending: Explosive and very heroic.
  • Epilogue: Nice. With Marvel, it always leads to something else.
  • Dialogs: Slick, witty and fun.
  • Characters: Most of them are interesting and funny, while other are much simpler.
  • Acting: Great for most of them. I just love Mark Ruffalo as Banner, the best interpretation yet.
  • Visuals: Astounding. Huge.
  • Special Effects: Perfect.
  • Afterthoughts: I was simply wowed when I saw it.

Passengers — An awesome sci-fi with a great story — 9*/10

  • Overall: Amazing. The preview doesn't do it justice, but at least, it doesn't sell any of the punches.
  • Who is it for? Everyone, unless you really hate sci-fi.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355644/
  • Known actors: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne.
  • Cameos: Andy Garcia.
  • Setting: Outer space.
  • Style: Slick sci-fi about space travel with some romantic development.
  • Pacing: Perfect.
  • Intro: Slow. It gets you right in so smoothly you're not even aware of it. Then you forget you're watching a movie.
  • Story: Although there are some tense action moments, this is about the chain of events, even more than about the characters themselves. This is about their life and their predicament. A solid little intrigue. The only real negative point would be the apparition of the "lie". Fortunately this doesn't take over the whole scenario, which is as it should be.
  • Ending: Quite amazing if somewhat predictable.
  • Epilogue: Short, fun and unexpected. Great.
  • Dialogs: Well structured and very interesting. This is the engine of the film.
  • Characters: Solidly built with nice depth and realistic attitude.
  • Acting: Amazing.
  • Visuals: Fucking superb. Intensely beautiful on the big screen.
  • Special Effects: Perfect.
  • Afterthoughts: I couldn't have asked for more. It's a must see.

Back to the Future — A still enjoyable classic that marked a generation — 8*/10

  • Overall: Fun, full of great details, funky sci-fi and a captivating story.
  • Who is it for? Anyone who doesn't looking back.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088763/
  • Known actors: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Crispin Glover.
  • Style: A cool underdog adventure where sci-fi and time traveling play a background role to entertainment even though they're the main subjects.
  • Pacing: Quick.
  • Intro: Standard setup of places, characters and events.
  • Story: A great adventure that has little moral value and a lot of exciting things happening. You can't help but be pulled in.
  • Ending: Easy.
  • Epilogue: The consequence of fudging with the past explained with a setup for the next chapter.
  • Dialogs: Quick, fun, slick. Some are showing age a bit while still sounding good.
  • Characters: This is a character-driven story, it's all about them, their quirks, motivations and actions, but they're stereotyped. Few of them have any depths, but they are all very interesting and well portrayed.
  • Acting: Very good.
  • Visuals: Great attention to details.
  • Special Effects: Very few and only one showing its age.
  • Costumes: A bit on the clean side, but that's 1985 for you.
  • Music: Very entertaining.
  • Score: Extremely lively and well set.
  • Afterthoughts: 30 years later and I still enjoyed watching it. It might have lost some of its luster, we don't do things the same way anymore, but it still shines.

Why Him? — You're average romantic comedy with nice sensibilities — 6*/10

  • Overall: Funny, if uninventive, with heart and good sensible feminist values although it doesn't look like it at first and it is about the two guys.
  • Who is it for? Anyone looking for a good laugh.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt4501244/
  • Known actors: James Franco, Bryan Cranston and Megan Mullally.
  • Cameos: Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Aoki, Elon Musk, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.
  • Setting: Mostly .COM rich California.
  • Style: Romantic comedy, on the juvenile side.
  • Intro: Pathetic, awkward and bad.
  • Story: Lots of funny moments derived from clashing styles. There are some very juvenile jokes, but the flick also mostly avoided the easy plot elements like the lies, the mistaken identities, and the I-will-not-forgive-you.
  • Ending: This is where there's some feminism sensibility. If they had cut it just before the elevator pitch, it would have been pretty good. Now, it's just too much.
  • Epilogue: As bad as they come.
  • Dialogs: Funny.
  • Characters: Funny, with a good sense of depth, even though there are a few stereotypes involved. This is probably the movie's strongest aspect.
  • Acting: Good.
  • Afterthoughts: Had some good fun, pretty much what I expected, minus the horribly long epilogue.
