Professor Marston and the Wonder Women — A compelling romance — 8*/10

It's simply told, but the story itself is anything but, even today. It presents kinky and non-monogamous relationships for the whole world to see and, more importantly, to understand. It doesn't go in depth, but it definitely is compelling. It doesn't contain any action, but it doesn't have any flaws either. A quiet strong romance. A solid biography.

Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote.

Baby Driver — Solid car action flick — 8*/10

It's a movie for car chase lovers. Great tempo, tight action, well built nicely acted characters (if simple), good visuals, delicious dialogs, and very interesting story (if not complex).

Ansel Elgort, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Lily James, Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx.

The Space Between Us — A very nice semi sci-fi semi-romantic story — 7*/10

The relationship between the boy and the girl is very well done, but the rest is spotty at best and the science fiction a mere background, often faulty. It is easy to enjoy, and it's good light entertainment.

Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Carla Gugino and Gary Oldman.

Focus — A nice little romantic comedy about con artists — 7*/10

Being a movie about con, you expect con everywhere. The thing is, it's never where you think it is. That's good. However, as a script, it doesn't take any risk, although the cons are nice. If you don't look for them too much, you'll see them. That being, it's entertaining and has a nice little fun romance thrown in the mix.

Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Adrian Martinez.

Passengers — An awesome sci-fi with a great story — 9*/10

  • Overall: Amazing. The preview doesn't do it justice, but at least, it doesn't sell any of the punches.
  • Who is it for? Everyone, unless you really hate sci-fi.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355644/
  • Known actors: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne.
  • Cameos: Andy Garcia.
  • Setting: Outer space.
  • Style: Slick sci-fi about space travel with some romantic development.
  • Pacing: Perfect.
  • Intro: Slow. It gets you right in so smoothly you're not even aware of it. Then you forget you're watching a movie.
  • Story: Although there are some tense action moments, this is about the chain of events, even more than about the characters themselves. This is about their life and their predicament. A solid little intrigue. The only real negative point would be the apparition of the "lie". Fortunately this doesn't take over the whole scenario, which is as it should be.
  • Ending: Quite amazing if somewhat predictable.
  • Epilogue: Short, fun and unexpected. Great.
  • Dialogs: Well structured and very interesting. This is the engine of the film.
  • Characters: Solidly built with nice depth and realistic attitude.
  • Acting: Amazing.
  • Visuals: Fucking superb. Intensely beautiful on the big screen.
  • Special Effects: Perfect.
  • Afterthoughts: I couldn't have asked for more. It's a must see.

Why Him? — You're average romantic comedy with nice sensibilities — 6*/10

  • Overall: Funny, if uninventive, with heart and good sensible feminist values although it doesn't look like it at first and it is about the two guys.
  • Who is it for? Anyone looking for a good laugh.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt4501244/
  • Known actors: James Franco, Bryan Cranston and Megan Mullally.
  • Cameos: Cedric the Entertainer, Steve Aoki, Elon Musk, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.
  • Setting: Mostly .COM rich California.
  • Style: Romantic comedy, on the juvenile side.
  • Intro: Pathetic, awkward and bad.
  • Story: Lots of funny moments derived from clashing styles. There are some very juvenile jokes, but the flick also mostly avoided the easy plot elements like the lies, the mistaken identities, and the I-will-not-forgive-you.
  • Ending: This is where there's some feminism sensibility. If they had cut it just before the elevator pitch, it would have been pretty good. Now, it's just too much.
  • Epilogue: As bad as they come.
  • Dialogs: Funny.
  • Characters: Funny, with a good sense of depth, even though there are a few stereotypes involved. This is probably the movie's strongest aspect.
  • Acting: Good.
  • Afterthoughts: Had some good fun, pretty much what I expected, minus the horribly long epilogue.

Mr. Right — An action comedy full of crazy surprises — 8*/10

  • Overall: This is not a big production, but the entertainment value is super high, especially if you like things done differently.
  • Who is it for? Anyone looking for a bit of action and some fun.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt2091935/
  • Known actors: Anna Kendrick, Sam Rockwell and Tim Roth.
  • Style: Crazy action comedy.
  • Intro: Really fun.
  • Story: It goes in bold directions that are really novel and refreshing. The action is tight and short. The silliness is nicely funny. Nice little intrigue. The tone is light, yet there are lessons hidden in there. If the story is rather simple, the rest is anything but.
  • Ending: Well done.
  • Epilogue: Unnecessary, but funny.
  • Dialogs: Funny, crazy and witty.
  • Characters: I love them all. Heavy dose of crazy in there.
  • Acting: Just right.
  • Afterthoughts: Total surprise, thoroughly entertained.

Vanilla Sky — A weird semi sci-fi that needs to be watched more than once — 8*/10

  • Overall: It's the kind of movie which is better when watched the second time around, it's only then that it really gets as good as it should. Great one by director Cameron Crowe.
  • Who is it for? Those who like mystery based on some science fiction, or those looking to explore a slow movie that will make you think in the end.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0259711/
  • Known actors: Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Jason Lee, Kurt Russell and Timothy Spall.
  • Cameos: Tilda Swinton, Noah Taylor and Michael Shannon.
  • Setting: Rich American upper class.
  • Style: Dramatic mind fuck.
  • Pacing: Slow, really slow, but not show much as not to capture your interest.
  • Story: It's a look at youth, late 20s early 30s, its blindness and the long-term effects it can have on us and those we relate to.
  • Ending: Philosophical.
  • Dialogs: Almost schizophrenic, very intelligent and strongly emotional.
  • Characters: Stark and solid, realistic in their own way.
  • Acting: Amazing.
  • Visuals: Solid.
  • Special Effects: Good. There are very few of them, but some are getting a bit old, although it's just at the end and they're still good.
  • Afterthoughts: The first time around, I was disappointed by the ending, the second time, I was ready to spend the time thinking it through and pondering the ins and outs.

Mr. Nobody — Be ready for a quiet surreal sci-fi ride — 8*/10

  • Overall: This is the kind of movie that feels very exploratory.
  • Who is it for? Only a few, those who like sci-fi and films that mess with time in a surreal way.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0485947/
  • Known actors: Jared Leto and Rhys Ifans.
  • Style: Almost surreal sci-fi.
  • Story: It's about choices, building time and deconstructing it. A very different sci-fi with romance, sadness, hopes and illusions. You get lost, but you explore so many possibilities.
  • Ending: Could have been stronger. Kinda weak compared to the rest.
  • Characters: You get an excellent feel for those characters that do not fit into your standard stereotypes.
  • Acting: Excellent.
  • Visuals: Strong.
  • Special Effects: Solid, if not perfect.
  • Camera Work: Excellent. Makes the story telling work.
  • Afterthoughts: I thought it was weird, my kind of weird and few others. I loved it because it was so bold in what it tried to convey. My mind felt at ease with the script going in every direction, because it works the same way. I just wished for a different ending.

Bridget Jones's Baby — The best one of the series yet — 7*/10

  • Overall: I was pleasantly surprised and nicely entertained for the most part. Still, it came up short on some points.
  • Who is it for? The fans of the series or anyone curious enough about the idiosyncrasies of such a character.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1473832/
  • Known actors: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey and Emma Thompson.
  • Cameos: Jim Broadbent.
  • Setting: Well off English individuals.
  • Style: Standard romantic comedy.
  • Story: Interesting, very funny, not pathetic as some of the previous chapters were, and some excellent decisions as far as how events unfolded. However, the fighting between the men, even though I've seen worst, was a bit too rom-com. That's now how it happens in real life. More over, I would have been very happy without all the flashbacks of passed movies.
  • Ending: This is where they dropped the ball. Predictable and way too easy.
  • Dialogs: Funny, if simple. Loved the narration as always.
  • Characters: Simple.
  • Score: Great. Nice modern twist in some places.
  • Afterthoughts: I was disappointed by the end, but I still enjoyed myself. Hopefully, there won't be another one after this.

Guess Who — A very funny romantic comedy but don't expect too much — 6*/10

  • Overall: Very funny, but with a lot of very limiting relationship values being upheld.
  • Who is it for? Those who want to laugh watching something romantic that fits well within preordained ideas.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372237/
  • Known actors: Ashton Kutcher, Zoe Saldana and Bernie Mac.
  • Setting: Upper class.
  • Story: Lots of funny goofy jokes that try to lightly talk about the sensitive subject of racism. Unfortunately, it completely sidesteps the issue and then goes right on condoning a very rigid relationship code of conduct that. Two miss with one stone.
  • Dialogs: Hilarious.
  • Characters: Well built if very stereotypical.
  • Acting: Good.

Get Over It — A light teen romantic comedy for everyone — 6*/10

  • Overall: If you close your eyes and stop thinking a little bit, this is quite enjoyable.
  • Who is it for? Those looking for something light.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0192071/
  • Known actors: Kirsten Dunst, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana, Martin Short, Swoosie Kurtz, Ed Begley Jr. and Sisqó.
  • Cameos: Carmen Electra.
  • Setting: Average high school, well-off families.
  • Style: Your basic teen romantic comedy.
  • Story: A love triangle, can't get a simpler romantic script. However, it is presented in such silly and goofy way that it gets a certain shine. Don't take it seriously.
  • Characters: Simple.
  • Acting: Some are pretty good, others are just adequate.
  • Visuals: Getting a bit old, but not enough to stop anyone from enjoying it.

Café Society — An enjoyable moment just short of great — 8*/10

  • Overall: Lives lived in the fast lanes, interesting and full of details, but the film fails to really be special.
  • Who is it for? Fans of Woody Allen.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt4513674/
  • Known actors: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart and Steve Carell.
  • Setting: Hollywood and New York jet-set crowd and venues in the 1930s.
  • Story: Although it is very interesting, full of details and different things, including family lives, Jewish humor, romance and some anecdotal violence, it fails at greatness. Short of that lofty goal, you still get captivated by all the interweaving lives.
  • Ending: It ends as life does, on a suspended note. A bit unsatisfying, but realistic.
  • Dialogs: Witty. Quick.
  • Characters: Full of life and details.
  • Acting: Solid.
  • Visuals: Rich and vibrant with well-chosen color palettes.
  • Costumes: Beautiful and on the spot.

Corpse Bride — A beautiful and creepy stop animation film by Tim Burton — 8*/10

  • Overall: Enchanting, in a creepy way. Touching romantic story. Could have done without the singing.
  • Who is it for? For fantasy lovers, Burton fans and anyone looking for a creepy love story or some good stop animation.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0121164/
  • Known actors: Helena Bonham Carter, Johnny Depp, Tracey Ullman and Christopher Lee.
  • Style: Very Tim Burton.
  • Pacing: Quick and to the point, it is short after all, especially if you don't take into account the songs.
  • Intro: Annoying singing.
  • Story: There lies a hidden intrigue within this fantastic touching love story based on a very simple premise.
  • Ending: An interesting little twist in how it happened, even if the end result was generally predictable.
  • Dialogs: Neat.
  • Characters: Quite fantastic, well made and thoroughly thought out.
  • Acting: Solid.
  • Visuals: Beautiful.
  • Music: Haunting and perfect, by Danny Elfman. The singing was totally unnecessary.

Braveheart — It captured the imagination then and it still does now — 9*/10

  • Overall: Epic medieval story by actor-director Mel Gibson that will easily transport you.
  • Who is it for? Anyone wanting to watch a grandiose story. Short attention spans should abstain, because it is very long and develops slowly. It is also quite violent.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112573/
  • Known actors: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, John Kavanagh, Brendan Gleeson and Tommy Flanagan.
  • Cameos: Brian Cox.
  • Setting: Grubby, dirty medieval England and Scotland.
  • Style: Gritty sometimes gory folk hero war story with a side of romance. Lots of different elements make for a complete tale.
  • Pacing: There are multiple culmination points and multiple paces to the storytelling which gathered together build a great narration. It is quite long, almost three hours.
  • Intro: Slowly sets the tone and immerses us in the story.
  • Story: It has a lot to tell and it takes its time to do it. Full of action, battles, angry Scots and some romance, it is no wonder it was such a success and it is still now a cultural reference.
  • Ending: Gripping. Gut wrenching.
  • Epilogue: Could have done without it, although it is pretty moving.
  • Dialogs: Well rendered.
  • Characters: They all have very palpable personality. As you get to know each of them, you get to understand each of them without a doubt.
  • Acting: Superb.
  • Visuals: Beautiful in a gritty way. The film is getting old and you can see it, but you can still appreciate the quality.
  • Special Effects: Only a few disappointing mishaps that you usually only see on subsequent watch.
  • Costumes: Excellent designs, very realistic.
  • Score: Gripping, grandiose.

The Legend of Tarzan — A welcome change of storyline to the classic — 7*/10

  • Overall: Better and more complex than the trailer would suggest. Lots of action, high adventure and a bit of romance.
  • Who is it for? Anyone. Women will especially appreciate Tarzan.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0918940/
  • Known actors: Margot Robbie, Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou.
  • Setting: Colonial times.
  • Style: Hero kind of jungle adventure flick.
  • Story: This take on the after Tarzan base story is good while it provides us at the same time with all of what came before without boring us. Lots of detailed events with a nice complexity as far as the situation is concerned. There's a number of flaws, including the skiff, which was ridiculous, and the vine drop on the train, but they're not too bad.
  • Ending: That's where it gets boring.
  • Epilogue: Although unnecessary, it ties things together without pandering to the audience which is as good as an epilogue goes.
  • Characters: You really get to hate the bad guy because they really pushed it, but then Tarzan and Jane are as unidimensional as it gets. That being said, Tarzan is full of nice details and Jane is not too much of a doll (but still is one). The biggest problem here is that there are no gorilla "tribe" that acts like that. A smaller one problem is that all the African tribesmen are apparently bodybuilders.
  • Acting: Solid.
  • Visuals: Gorgeous. Worth seeing on the big screen.
  • Special Effects: Very few mistakes and all of them near invisible.

mercredi 13 juillet 2016

Awake — Excellent intrigue and a nice simmering suspense — 8*/10

  • Overall: It's not perfect, but the intrigue will easily get you going and the suspense will then pick up.
  • Who is it for? Those looking for a nice intrigue with a bit of suspense. Nothing scary there.
  • Synopsis & informationhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211933/
  • Known actors: Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba and Terrence Howard.
  • Cameos: Christopher McDonald.
  • Setting: Very rich.
  • Style: An intrigue that hides everything from you until each reveal.
  • Pacing: A very nice crescendo.
  • Intro: Pretty much straight to the point.
  • Story: At first glance, it looks like a romance, but it turns into something else halfway through. Feels realistic. Nice tension. Good twists. First time around, you really get caught up in the intrigue.
  • Ending: The last line is lame or badly delivered, I don't know, but it's really annoying.
  • Characters: A bit simple, but you can really feel them.
  • Acting: Nice performance on the part of everyone, but Hayden Christensen is probably showing the limit of his capabilities.
