The Dark Knight — The best Batman movie ever made to date — 9*/10

  • Overall: For its grit and realism, it is definitely great work by Christopher Nolan. There are some genius things and a few weaker things. It's all about the Joker.
  • Who is it for? Those looking for a psychotic realistic version of Gotham.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/
  • Known actors: Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.
  • Setting: DC Comics universe, in a realistic version.
  • Style: Dark action superhero.
  • Story: Very detailed and captivating with many successive plots. There are a few good risks that were taken, many action scenes, solid Joker moments. Realistic. Dark.
  • Ending: Amazingly good, thanks to the Joker.
  • Epilogue: It's not a waste of time and it's short.
  • Dialogs: The Joker's are great, the rest, not so much.
  • Characters: Here, the Joker is the top dog. The rest lack depth and usually fall into some form of stereotypes or other, especially the bad guys. Batman isn't so bad, but why do they have to make his voice so gravely all the time?
  • Acting: My hat goes to the Joker, once again. A royal performance, the best since Nicholson (read my review here), maybe even better. Others are pretty solid too, no complaints here.
  • Visuals: Realistic.
  • Special Effects: Great.
  • Afterthoughts: I saw it multiple times and still see the jewel, although personally, I don't like the stark realistic look and some of the stereotypes.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1031288/

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1064932/

Kung Fu Panda — Awesome and original fantasy kung-fu animation — 8*/10

  • Story: Captivating and highly funny, with great details.
  • Setting: Very original animal setting in a fantasy version of some far eastern country.
  • Style: A little bit silly, almost goofy with a strange slice of wisdom cutting right through it.
  • Pacing: Quick and to the point, but not too much so. For some reason, you can really feel his development even if it happens fast.
  • Ending: Sweet.
  • Dialogs: Hilarious and sometimes witty.
  • Characters: The hero, his master and his father have well developed personalities. The other are much simpler but nice too. The bad guy is unidimensional.
  • Acting: Very nice.
  • Known actors: Jack Black (hilarious), Dustin Hoffman (excellent), Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Michael Clarke Duncan and Wayne Knight.
  • Visuals: Beautiful.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441773/
  • Entertainment value: High.
  • Who is it for? Anyone, kids and adults alike, especially Black fans. If you like a good laugh and animation this if for you.

Semi-Pro — A silly and goofy basketball comedy — 6*/10

  • Scenario: This is not the kind of movie anyone should take seriously. It's obviously meant to make us laugh with absurd stunts and songs. It's the kind of film that is not as funny the first time you watch it as it is the second time, because it's only then that you hear and pay attention to the little comments that make that silly and goofy comedy good.
  • Known actors: Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, Maura Tierney, Andy Richter, David Koechner and Rob Corddry.
  • Visual & sound: Nice.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0839980/
  • Who is it for? Anyone looking for a silly and goofy comedy, especially if you like it sport themed, or any Ferrell fans. Beware, though, language and subject matters are probably not appropriate for kids.

Iron Man — An incredible start for this great super hero franchise — 8*/10

  • Scenario: This first chapter of the franchise was a big success and understandably so. Not only does it have great action, an almost roller coaster succession of fights, but everything around those was close to perfection. The only exception and my only regret is that I found the story a little light. It did give us a nice version of the birth of Iron Man and its successive improvements, but the last third of the movie was somewhat stark. That being said, do not let this deter you from seeing it, because it ranks amongst the best super hero flicks out there, and, please, do not miss the third chapter (read my review here), it's amazing.
  • Dialogs: Great, fast paced, loads of details.
  • Characters: An even better development than in the comics. I loved how they made characters out of the robots, just hilarious.
  • Actors: Robert Downey Jr. is the perfect Tony Stark, showing all its qualities and flaws in a beautiful rendition. The rest of the cast did a good job too. Cast members include Gwyneth Paltrow (just right for the role), Jeff Bridges (excellent performance on his part in a surprising role), Leslie Bibb, Paul Bettany (now, I can't imagine Jarvis with any other voice), Terrence Howard, Clark Gregg and Jon Favreau (who also did an amazing job as director).
  • Photography: Great.
  • Sound: Electrifying music and score.
  • Special effects: Perfect.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/
  • Who is it for? Any super hero or Downey fans.

Speed Racer — The silliest movie the Wachowskis have ever made — 7*/10

  • Scenario: The global frame of the story is not new, but the Wachowskis do give it an incredible spin. It's so silly and out there, that it took me more than half the movie to get into the right mindset, but by the end I could really believe that the main character was in the zone and believe in the world the directors built. There's a lot of driving action in this weird flick, and if you have the patience for it, you will most likely enjoy it.
  • Dialogs: Very comic book.
  • Characters: Simple, even caricatural, but then so's the film. The most annoying character is the little brother Spritle and he takes some getting use to. Fortunately, he calms down at some point, and he is part of the silly nature of the flick.
  • Actors: Good work on the part of everybody. Cast members include John Goodman, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon, Richard Roundtree and Emile Hirsch.
  • Photography: Extremely colorful. A very special treatment that requires getting used to.
  • Sound: Nice music and score.
  • Special effects: A very special treatment that requires getting used to.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0811080/
  • Who is it for? Wachowskis fans or those looking for something very different and silly.

Gran Torino — An urban tale close to perfection — 9*/10

  • Scenario: There are a few elements that you'll recognize immediately, but mostly, this scenario is full of novelty. More over, the movie isn't about what the synopsis might imply, it's about opening up your horizon, but done in a fairly unconventional way. I just love the end, although no gang would have waited at the house to be picked up. Although it has a violent angry vibe to it, it contains very little actual violence.
  • Dialogs: Priceless. Just perfect. Love the Asian sister's repartee.
  • Characters: You have your basic grumpy old man with a heart of gold. He's really annoying, but not so much as to discourage continued viewing and you really get attached to him. Even though that's a bit predictable, the way it happens is not.
  • Actors: Solid work on the part of everyone. Cast members include Clint Eastwood and John Carroll Lynch.
  • Photography: Good camera work and sets.
  • Sound: Nice music and score.
  • Special effects: None.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1205489/
  • Who is it for? It's a must see, unless you need glamorous settings.

Another incredible film by Eastwood as a director.

Yes Man — Easy entertainment that will cheer you up — 7*/10

  • Story: Funny, based on an interesting concept, a bit predictable, but very enjoyable and entertaining.
  • Characters: Not complicated, but good enough.
  • Dialogs: Funny.
  • Scenario: Good pacing, well built.
  • Actors: Jim Carrey is very good in the main role as he steered away from excess. Zooey Deschanel does a nice job, even though she didn't have much room to show her talent. A small role for Bradley Cooper, before he had made his mark, well done. Solid mention for: John Michael Higgins and Terence Stamp.
  • Photography: Nice.
  • Special effects: Almost none.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1068680/
  • Who is it for? Those looking for light entertainment or Carrey fans.

Hamlet 2 — Crazy and totally fucking amazing laugh fest — 8*/10

Hamlet 2, once you're past the very awkward and ridiculous beginning, is a genius piece of comedy. Very few movies have been able to play into such a degree of silliness and yet have a realistic and compelling resonance with its audience. By the end, you'll see that it's much better than what you thought it would be, just keep your mind open.

Not for everyone, but if you haven't seen, you have to!

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist — A solid modern take on the teen comedy romance — 8*/10

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist is a great attempt at breaking the Hollywood mold for teen comedy romance. You have your standard heartsick underdog, beautiful ex-girlfriend, love-hate potential conquest, and happy ending, but the rest is pretty novel. It's very funny, with lots of great ideas, solid acting, and a scenario that doesn't follow the standard routine.

A treat for anyone not looking for action.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall — It's a surprising flick you should really give a try — 7*/10

Forgetting Sarah Marshall starts really pathetic, I even found it difficult to watch at first. However, it slowly improves. Come the middle of the movie, you won't be able to stop watching it, and by the end you should be very happy you made that choice. There a number of scenes in that scenario that are gems. Their beauty comes from the fact that they take unexpected turn, at least when it comes Hollywood standards. The end is rosy, true, but it's not too syrupy and it's very funny.

Truly worth the pain of the intro.

Pineapple Express — Ludicrous, interesting, and somewhat funny for when you need to turn your brain off — 6*/10

Pineapple Express is your basic stoner comedy. Its real attraction comes from the fact that it is our introduction to new stars in the comedy circles.

For those who like pot movies.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - Discover and be amazed - 8*/10

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day is two incredibly funny female characters in non-stop social whirlwind topped with some quirky romance, all of it set in great decors. It isn't a period piece, but it does give you a fresh sense of wonder. Lots of heart and feelings.

For those who love quirky solid films.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno - Hilarious and off the wall - 8*/10

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is an other easy to watch comedy by Kevin Smith, the most accessible one for the general public. At the heart of it, though, it's about being fearless, going through with something that scares you, taking a chance. Nice acting, hilarious bits, solid dialogs and well scripted scenario.

A must watch for comedy lovers.

The Lucky Ones - Very different story with nice twists - 7*/10

The Lucky Ones doesn't go where you think it will go, not once. Considering we're talking about soldiers, it's an extremely low key movie, yet the story is interesting and you can relate to the characters even if you've never been in the army.

For something different to watch.

Taken — A thrill ride of action in the name of what's right — 9*/10

Taken is extremely satisfying as lots of very nasty guys die. The story is linear, but intelligent and very detailed. Excellent suspense, tense action, and superb car chases. The characters are well developed and you can feel their realism, even if they are at time a bit single-minded. You will assuredly cheer Liam Neeson on and share his anger as well as his concern, passion, and love.

I highly recommend it, especially if you like action.

Burn After Reading — What if you believed you were in a spy movie? — 9*/10

Burn After Reading is a weird movie. It takes everything that makes a good spy flick and turns it on its head. You can't help but incredulously laugh at what happens. This is all about oddballs.

The good. Excellent acting. Totally off the wall characters, actions and situations, yet completely logical. Story with twists within twists. Well paced scenario. Solid dialogs. Nice action.

The actors. George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, and John Malkovich play disturbingly crazy roles stuffed with delusion and heavily dosed with stupidity. While Richard Jenkins, David Rasche, and J.K. Simmons seem almost out of place as the standard bearers of reason.

The bad. Since it's so bizarre, it won't please everyone.

The ugly. Nothing.

The result. Offbeat and cooky comedy. Don't think you'll see your run of the mill kind of film and you'll have fun.

Hancock — A drunk anti-hero for laughs and action — 7*/10

Hancock is the odd super hero flick. You'll get a number of good laughs, some drama, and plenty of action.

Will Smith does an excellent job of playing the troubled brooding angry emotional anti-hero who doesn't give a fuck. The superb Charlize Theron gives us an other great emotional experience. And Jason Bateman is probably at his funniest as the kind hearted, right minded, tries as hard as he can good samaritan.

The scenes are well built, with nice connection between each of them. The dialogs are uproariously funny. The intrigued is well maintained. The action is interesting and diversified. The drama and the emotions are compelling, heart-tugging. And the setup is imaginative.

The real problem lies in the fact that the movie doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. The action and the special effects are clearly the biggest assets, but the scenario says it's a funny piece, up until the third act, where it changes to a dramatic story. It doesn't have a cohesive whole. It feels like an introduction without the followup story. Most super hero film introducing their main character will have more meat to offer. The worst scene is the one with the French speaking kid. Remove the accent and it works.

Still, it's great entertainment, especially if you like super heroes, action, or any of the principal actors.
