Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life — Just for tweens — 5*/10

  • Overall: It could have been much better.
  • Who is it for? Tweens.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4981636/
  • Known actors: Lauren Graham and Rob Riggle.
  • Cameos: Michael Rapaport.
  • Pacing: In many places, it went too fast, we couldn't feel it or it felt wrong.
  • Story: It had so many solid elements to make this a really poignant and funny story, yet it was rushed and crumpled under its own weight.
  • Characters: Too shallow, simple or archetypical.
  • Acting: Surprisingly good and some not so good.
  • Afterthoughts: Very disappointed, yet amazed at some excellent bits lost in the sum of all its parts.

Beautiful Creatures — Your run of the mill tween fantasy romance movie with a few niceties — 6*/10

  • Story: There are a few surprises, but mostly, it's a tween fantasy romance flick. Nothing breaks the mold, even the end which almost did.
  • Characters: Shallow, if sexy at times.
  • Dialogs: Mildly interesting.
  • Scenario: Uninventive, save a few exceptions.
  • Actors: Acceptable.
  • Photography: Acceptable.
  • Special effects: Except for the storm at the end, which was great, the rest just barely makes the grade.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1559547/
  • Who is it for? Tweens, people who have nothing to do and really needs a fantasy fix, or brain damaged individuals.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Not as strong but still very entertaining - 7*/10

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is not as strong as its first installment, but is still a great spectacle. Impressive visuals with the same captivating setting. However, there's a few flaws in the scenarios and it feels too much like the middle movie it is. It's rehashed stuff without solid plot elements that seems to be promised in the next film.

To be seen if you like the first one.

Jack the Giant Slayer — A fairy tale for tweens — 6*/10

Jack the Giant Slayer is a kid's story, with grownup action and special effects. There's no blood mind you, just a bit of people eating, and some betrayal, so it's safe for children, but young ones don't need that much fighting. So, you might say it's a movie for tweens. The loving is limited to lip kissing, no tongue, there's a bit of gross humor, the good ones are all good, and the evil ones are all evil.

The special effects and the sets are great, you'll definitively be entertained, and the acting is not so bad, but that's it.

The scenario is simplistic. The characters are shallow, with one track mind. The armors and the defensive "medieval" architecture are not realistic. The dialogs are uninventive. And the end is a disaster. She should have gotten the crown, he has no business having it, and it should end after they kneel. After that, it's diarrhea inducing crap, that doesn't add a shred of substance to the film.

Still, the result is a little bit better than the trailer led to believe.
