Baywatch — The previews are better than the movie — 5*/10

Too many dead moments, without impact or just not funny. Many good ideas, but poorly executed. It could have been great.

Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1469304/

Power Rangers — It's only a teen sci-fi action flick, no more — 5*/10

I guess I was expecting too much and was disappointed. The reboot is not bad considering the comics weren't very good to start with. Nice action, nice ideas, just a bit overly simple.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3717490/

Assassin's Creed — There's very little good to say about it — 5*/10

  • Overall: Action, special effects, interesting ideas, but nothing else. It seems more like a setup for what follows than a real movie.
  • Who is it for? Those who really feel like they should see it.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2094766/
  • Known actors: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Michael Kenneth Williams.
  • Cameos: Brendan Gleeson.
  • Style: Action flick that can't really pick a style.
  • Pacing: Crap.
  • Intro: Interesting, probably the best part since the background idea is the best part of this flick.
  • Story: It would have been much better if they had simply chosen a time period to tell the story in. As they did it, you don't get attached to anything and it feels like an intro to the next chapter.
  • Ending: Not really an ending. Almost boring.
  • Epilogue: They had to show it kept on going or else this movie would have been a complete waste of time.
  • Dialogs: Weak, at best.
  • Characters: Really, really simple.
  • Acting: Solid. Probably one of its saving grace.
  • Visuals: Solid.
  • Special Effects: Perfect.
  • Afterthoughts: I wasn't expecting much, but I was still disappointed.

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life — Just for tweens — 5*/10

  • Overall: It could have been much better.
  • Who is it for? Tweens.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4981636/
  • Known actors: Lauren Graham and Rob Riggle.
  • Cameos: Michael Rapaport.
  • Pacing: In many places, it went too fast, we couldn't feel it or it felt wrong.
  • Story: It had so many solid elements to make this a really poignant and funny story, yet it was rushed and crumpled under its own weight.
  • Characters: Too shallow, simple or archetypical.
  • Acting: Surprisingly good and some not so good.
  • Afterthoughts: Very disappointed, yet amazed at some excellent bits lost in the sum of all its parts.

Masterminds — Silly, yet not really as good as it could have been — 5*/10

  • Overall: It's really silly, but it lacks some finish to make it hilarious.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2461150/
  • Known actors: Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson and Leslie Jones.
  • Style: Silly low IQ criminals.
  • Story: A succession of poor decisions that creates silly situations but never completely gel as a flick.
  • Characters: Unbelievable, but true.
  • Acting: Silly.
  • Costumes: Silly.
  • Afterthoughts: It didn't miss the mark by much. Just a little bit more care and you'd have something hilarious. I enjoyed it, but nothing more.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax — Too many flaws and mistakes — 5*/10

  • Overall: Lots of good ideas and a great packaging, unfortunately, the script was poorly thought through.
  • Who is it for? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3991412/
  • Afterthoughts: Disappointed.

Bad Moms — A bad bad bad movie unless you're just looking to laugh — 5*/10

  • Overall: It's very funny, but it still continues to put the same pressure on mothers to do it all.
  • Who is it for? I think moms will get a kick out of if in some ways.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4651520/
  • Known actors: Mila Kunis, Kathryn Hahn, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith and Clark Duke.
  • Setting: Suburban higher-income families.
  • Story: Lots of goofy and funny stuff. Easily enjoyable.
  • Ending: Bad, bad, bad. Ruins the whole thing. Everything turns out perfect, every little thing fixing itself miraculously.
  • Dialogs: Funny. However, the kids' parts were unrealistic. Most of it wouldn't have been uttered by any real children. More over, throwing in that speech and making her mom feel selfish just wasn't right and is a very bad idea to promote.
  • Characters: Goofy and interesting.
  • Acting: Good. Kathryn Hahn was equal to herself, Kristen Bell was very believable showing a new side to herself, but Mila Kunis could have done much better. I blame the script and the directorial notes because she's a great actress and just wasn't believable here.
  • Music: Party set.

Love the end credits interview. Really cool.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates — Just too juvenile a comedy — 5*/10

  • Overall: Juvenile and exaggerated. You have to really turn your brain off to come close to appreciate this flick.
  • Who is it for? No one, unless you're really high or brainless.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2823054/
  • Known actors: Anna Kendrick, Zac Efron, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Devine and Stephen Root.
  • Intro: No confusion, right to it.
  • Story: Succeeding number of ridiculous events. Sometimes you lose yourself in it, but then Mike goes off a wire and you automatically tune out.
  • Ending: Give me a break.
  • Dialogs: Mostly crap. Sentences of the word deprived.
  • Characters: Very superficial, you can barely see something resembling reality from time to time. The four main ones lack a full brain between themselves.
  • Acting: They achieved what they were aiming for, so I have to salute them for it. Zac Efron and Anna Kendrick did really well and you remove the stupid antics of Adam Devine and you'd probably have something that's actually watchable and funny.

Independence Day: Resurgence — Worse than the first one, more grandiose special effects — 5*/10

  • Overall: Lots of beautiful action and special effects, with very little else. The sequel, though, maybe...
  • Known actors: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner, Bill Pullman and William Fichtner.
  • Style: Pure action sci-fi, devoid of anything else.
  • Pacing: Fast.
  • Intro: I don't remember an intro. That's how bad it was.
  • Story: Many logical flaws. First part is absolutely boring. Second part more entertaining, but empty.
  • Ending: Predictable.
  • Epilogue: Overstated the sequel. That sequel, though, could be amazing, if they try even just a little bit more than the first two chapters which doesn't make me believe they will.
  • Dialogs: Absolute crap. Only the dialogs of the scientists Levinson and Okun were any good, and strictly because they were funny.
  • Characters: To give an idea of the dearth of interest, only the old ones were anywhere near good and still fell short. All the new ones had the depth of a puddle.
  • Acting: Good, especially considering what they were working with.
  • Visuals: Beautiful. The 3D wasn't too bad, no mistakes, but not really worth it.
  • Special Effects: Spectacular.
  • Sound: Full IMAX sound was incredible.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1628841/
  • Who is it for? Die-hard fans of action or sci-fi. Others should abstain.

Central Intelligence — First, it's going to make you laugh and then it's going to get lost — 5*/10

  • Overall: First part, good. Second part, boring.
  • Known actors: Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.
  • Cameos: Jason Bateman and Aaron Paul.
  • Style: Silly action comedy with a moral.
  • Intro: Funny, touching and morally positive, but not overly creative and full of stereotypes.
  • Story: The first half is kind of good, because you're setting up the characters and it's fun. The second part is boring because the intrigue and pursuit are weak.
  • Ending: It falls flat.
  • Epilogue: I'm not sure what to make of it and then there's an epilogue to the epilogue. WTF.
  • Dialogs: Simple. Lots of high pitch craziness from Hart.
  • Characters: Love the Stone character. I think they went with: let's try to make maximum ridicule look cool. Hilarious and cool. The rest are not worth mentioning.
  • Acting: Okay, I guess.
  • Visuals: Meh.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1489889/
  • Who is it for? Limited to Johnson and Hart fans, no one else.

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising — Mostly a miss for this comedy — 5*/10

  • Story: I like that they give this sequel (read my review of the first chapter here) a feminist undertone, but these antics weren't very imaginative and the story felt stale, even though some of the jokes were funny.
  • Known actors: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Chloë Grace Moretz
  • Cameos: Lisa Kudrow, Selena Gomez, Dave Franco and Kelsey Grammer.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4438848/
  • Entertainment value: Minimal.
  • Who is it for? Those without a brain or those wanting to see the sequel.

Ratchet & Clank — Good for kids, not too boring for adults — 5*/10

If you're going to see it with your kids, you won't be bored too much, but you probably won't really like it. Beyond the graphics, the rest will only satisfy children. They will love it though.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2865120/

jeudi 5 mai 2016

Barbershop: The Next Cut — Easy jokes with very little more — 5*/10

I think a preschooler could have come up with that story. Scratch that. A preschooler would have made it more interesting, if unlikely. Lots of talent, little to no content. Most jokes are funny, but the rest is ludicrously boring.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3628584/

The Huntsman: Winter's War — A fantasy that's not worth it — 5*/10

The only reason to keep watching this flick is the special effects and they aren't that good. The rest is poor at best: the dialogs, story that contains a tiny little twist, the characters and even the action scenes. You better be in a dire need of a fantasy fix to see this.

Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2381991/

The Last Witch Hunter — A fantasy flick barely worth its salt — 5*/10

  • Scenario: The story has some very good idea, but it's badly told. You just can't get into the mood as some things are stepped over or stomped into the ground without giving you too much perspective. The dialogs aren't bad as much as they are too easy making it all feel like a teen comic book. The acting is passable, the action is very interesting, but the entertainment value feels empty.
  • Known actors: Vin Diesel, Rose Leslie, Elijah Wood (what a bad role for him) and Michael Caine (who should have passed on something so small and so bad).
  • Visual & sound: Great special effects.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1618442/
  • Who is it for? Only those in need of a fantasy/action fix or Diesel fans.

jeudi 20 août 2015

Nailed! — Not bad but a little weak — 5*/10

  • Scenario: Not a bad starting idea, but the story has weak plot elements and jokes. The entertainment value is still there because of the quality performance of the cast, but not for any other reason.
  • Known actors: Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, Kurt Fuller, Tracy Morgan, Olivia Crocicchia, Paul Reubens, Kirstie Alley, Bill Hader and James Brolin.
  • Visual & sound: Decent.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1137470/
  • Who is it for? For those with a slow night wanting something light and funny with great actors.

lundi 10 août 2015

Fantastic Four — A disappointment on many levels — 5*/10

This reset of the franchise might have made Grimm and Reeds better, but failed at everything else. I only recommend this if you're in a need of a super hero fix, you've seen everything else and you require something new. It's not that it has anything bad in it, it's just that it doesn't have anything engaging.

mardi 4 août 2015

Æon Flux — Could have been so much better — 5*/10

  • Scenario: Great idea and background, unfortunately, badly implemented. The action is good, the mystery does keeps you interested, but the story lacks weight, so the resulting entertainment value is medium.
  • Known actors: Charlize Theron, Frances McDormand and Pete Postlethwaite.
  • Visual & sound: Varies from great to could be better.
  • Synopsis & information: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402022/
  • Who is it for? Theron fans and hardcore sci-fi fans in need of a fix.
