Blade Runner 2049 — It's simply mind-blowing, see it — 10*/10

I don't understand how critics can give it a bad review. Unless you don't like long movies or anything to do with sci-fi, you have to at least be entertained.

In this master piece by Denis Villeneuve, produced by Ridley Scott, mood is everything. Yes, there are long scenes where few things happen, but so what, it's delicious if you stop to enjoy it.

It's close to perfection. Just see it. In IMAX, because the sound and the visual are spectacular. Avoid 3D.

This movie won't leave anybody indifferent. Touching, sometimes in a harsh way with a reality that needs to be put to light. Surprising, shocking, and with unusual script decisions.

I'll only denounce the "love is stronger than everything" and monogamy ideas. Beyond that it's perfect. Amazing intrigue, action, story... It's just mind-blowing. One of the best 3D I've ever seen, but not necessary. A masterpiece by Luc Besson.

Great selection of 80s music, sometimes remixed. The best of the 80s fashion without any of its faux pas. Compact realistic (to a point) action. Amazingly entertaining and captivating story with only a few predictable elements, but themselves often twisted.

• Characters: Most of them are interesting and funny, while other are much simpler.
• Acting: Great for most of them. I just love Mark Ruffalo as Banner, the best interpretation yet.
• Visuals: Astounding. Huge.
• Special Effects: Perfect.
• Afterthoughts: I was simply wowed when I saw it.

Nocturnal Animals — A psychological movie you should open your mind to — 10*/10

• Overall: A masterfully brooding, riveting, yet beautiful film by Tom Ford.
• Who is it for? Anyone who likes a good moody movie.

• Style: Brooding, psychological near suspense.
• Pacing: An incredible almost continuous stop-and-go. It feels slow, really slow, like being stuck in thick molasse, because what happens is so tense and it doesn't happen all at once. Nonetheless, things proceed at a steady pace, inescapably, sometimes against our will.
• Intro: The credits are difficult to watch, because we don't like that kind of harsh reality, but also because movies usually convey only beauty even when it's ugly.
• Story: It takes you to the edge, tensed, and suspends you there for what seems like a long time. You can't help, but be on this edge... and finally jump. Then, it takes you down slowly into reality, making you see that not everything is as you'd like it to be. I love the way the stories are mixed and paralleled. The mood is masterful. Some scenes are difficult, gut wrenching. You would want to do anything but what happened. Still it is riveting.
• Ending: Absolutely perfect.
• Epilogue: None, whatsoever. Love it!
• Dialogs: Powerful, simple, to the point.
• Characters: Great, realistic, extremely deep and well developed. 
• Acting: Amazingly strong.
• Visuals: Incredibly beautiful in a very pure manner,  but also in a realistic way.
• Costumes: Beautiful.
• Score: Very moody. Perfect.
• Afterthoughts: I was blown away by this production and absolutely loved it. Only two little things bothered me. Unfortunately, it panders to two ideas we too often circulate in society that are completely false and make a lot of people miserable. First that we always turn into our parents. Second, that if we love someone we should try everything to make it work. Beyond that, I think it's perfect.

Arrival — The must-see of the year, even if you don't really like sci-fi — 10*/10

• Overall: Perfect. Very novel. A masterpiece by Denis Villeneuve.
• Who is it for? A must see. It's a sci-fi like you've never seen.

• Style: Introspective realistic sci-fi, but it's so much more.
• Pacing: Amazing. This is one of its greatest strengths.
• Intro: Great, especially once you understand the ending.
• Story: Mostly tense with unreal or introspective moments incredibly done. It transports you somewhere completely different. The real world fades to something barely known and you live again. Plus, it has a very strong sentimental dimension to it. And the mood... the mood is incredible, thick enough to hack at with a machete and sharp enough to shave.
• Ending: Things get into focus and the film bloom. It's as if a beautiful butterfly would morph into something even more beautiful.
• Dialogs: Always full of meaning.
• Characters: This is not a character movie, so they barely have any importance. Except for the main one, the others are rather simple, but you don't get to spend enough time with any of them to notice, so everything is fine.
• Acting: Excellent. Can't ask for more.
• Visuals: Astounding. Masterful.
• Special Effects: Perfect.
• Camera Work: Riveting choices. Lots of thought went into it and it shows.
• Score: Very reminiscent of 2001. Not so much the score itself, I find it much better, but the way it is built and used.
• Afterthoughts: It's one of those movies that you never forget.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — An intrigue of an impressive perfection — 10*/10

• Overall: A brain warper. It will transport you in its world with disarming ease.
• Who is it for? An absolute must for anyone who isn't too emotionally sensitive.

• Setting: Sweden.
• Style: Intrigue and investigation with strong psychological drama.
• Pacing: Slow, a perfect stew, right until its culmination.
• Intro: The setup is quick, everything is put into place right away.
• Story: Full of details and very psychological. The perfection of this film is in the way the intrigue develops. Each discovery is natural, realistic and very organic. It doesn't feel forced and each time it draws you in more until you're unable to move away, transfixed by the easy flow of events. The mood is absolutely entrancing. Perfect.
• Ending: Surprising, strong. Perfect.
• Epilogue: I normally hate epilogues, this one is so well done that it absolutely needs to be there.
• Dialogs: Great, although, with subtitles, it can be difficult to judge.
• Characters: Awe inspiring. Incredible depth, extremely well detailed and full of life, or the lack of it.
• Acting: Powerful. Hypnotic. Perfect.
• Visuals: Strong, slick, simple, perfect.
• Special Effects:

• Afterthoughts: Even knowing the intrigue, it's still amazing to watch. It's that good. Thoroughly entertained, especially on an intellectual level.

Star Trek — The best ever made and one accessible to all — 10*/10

• Overall: The best production ever to come out of the franchise, and relatable enough that anyone can see it without even knowing what Star Trek is all about. Great way to get to know this world.
• Who is it for? All sci-fi fans, but also anyone interested in a solid character based action flick.

• Story: Full of action with incredible levels of details. Gripping.
• Ending: Just wow.
• Dialogs: Witty, hilarious at times, or serious, never letting us down. 
• Characters: Well developed, a certain departure from the originals, but realistically so.
• Acting: Excellent. 
• Visuals: Mind blowing, all the time. Awe inspiring.
• Special Effects: Perfect. 
• Afterthoughts: The first time, I was blown away. The second time, I couldn't believe how good I still thought it was. I was as riveted as the first time. I highly recommend it 

Fight Club — A crazy fucking psychological masterpiece — 10*/10

• Overall: This is very different from most of what you have seen before. It's a great mix of psychotic, fighting and socio-philosophical revolution.
• Who is it for? Everyone, unless you don't like violence or some blood.

• Style: Violent psychological drama.
• Story: You get dragged in the dredge of this pathetic life and then up through the muck to finally stand in the shadow of mayhem and revolution. It's full of gripping events, confusing situations, fighting and psychotic behaviors.
• Ending: The big reveal is just as interesting the tenth time you see it as the first time, but the first time is quite the ride.
• Dialogs: Gripping, sincere.
• Characters: Incredibly well developed and extremely interesting.
• Acting: Astounding.
• Visuals: A sickly green which envelops you and sink you deep in the story. It's dirty. It's crude. It's perfect.
• Special Effects: The effects on the buildings at the end are getting a bit old, but by then, you don't care, because you're totally in it.
• Camera Work: Superb.

Eyes Wide Shut — Another dramatic masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick — 10*/10

• Overall: To most, it will look like an erotic drama when in reality it's a critique of the rampant conservative ideologies that everyone is running after.
• Who is it for? Those ready to be catapulted, slowly. Everyone should at least give it a try.

• Known actors: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Sydney Pollack, Rade Serbedzija, Vinessa Shaw and Leelee Sobieski.
• Setting: Opulent society.
• Style: Dramatic and stark with a slow-developing intrigue and a simmering suspense.
• Pacing: Slow. It feels like pulling out a strong and healthy tooth while under local anesthesia.
• Intro: Very smooth and with a solid dose of reality within a posh environment.
• Story: It's like going down the rabbit hole with Alice, things get crazier and crazier and only a good slap in the face can end it all. Reality can be scary to those who keep their eyes shut so tightly and Stanley Kubrick proves it here.
• Ending: What better ending is there than 'fuck'? Genius.
• Dialogs: Strong, realistic.
• Characters: Deep and well thought out.
• Acting: Superb. Perfect.
• Visuals: Beautiful.
• Score: Somber and mood enhancing.

Cyrano de Bergerac — D'une justesse et d'une beauté pratiquement irréprochable — 10*/10

Si vous aimez le texte originel d'Edmond Rostand, il n'y a pas de raison de ne pas adorer ce film. Cela fait maintenant plusieurs années que j'apprécie ce film et il est difficile pour moi d'imaginer une interprétation différente.

Le visuel est parfait et vieilli très bien. Les mots sont portés avec une précision émotionnelle et intellectuelle impressionnante. Je n'ai presque rien à redire de cette production.

• Story: Unfolds in a dramatic way, with almost never a dull or happy moment.
• Ending: Everything goes to shit and folds up squarely.
• Epilogue: Interesting. Violent.
• Dialogs: Solid and extremely believable.
• Characters: Incredible depth.
• Acting: Superb. Perfect. Almost too perfect.
• Special Effects: The explosion is getting a little old, but still excellent.
• Costumes: Eye popping.

C.R.A.Z.Y. — Un drame québécois profondément ancré en nous — 10*/10

Ce film à l'histoire bien tranquille d'une famille québécoise quand même ordinaire du dernier quart du vingtième siècle ne peut laisser personne indifférent, surtout ceux ayant dans vécu dans une période rapprochée de la leur. Elle fait appel à plusieurs concepts éternels de la vie de famille et des confrontations générationnelles entre pères et fils ainsi qu'entre frères.

D'une perfection abrutissante, on dirait qu'aucun détail n'a échappé à la production. Tous les membres de l'équipe ont dû mettre leur 100% pour arriver à un tel résultat. La vision est extraordinaire, le résultat impeccable.

Les intouchables — Un film cérébral absolument touchant et attachant — 10*/10

Impossible de ne pas aimer à moins d'être allergique aux sentiments et à l'humour. Vous allez immanquablement rire et vous ne pourrez faire autrement qu'être touché. L'humour intellectuel de la rue à la rescousse du fatalisme, de la déprime et de l'isolation.

Les prises de vue sont incroyablement belles tant au niveau du cadrage que de la lumière et des décors. Des acteurs parfaits pour leur rôle, des personnages d'une grande profondeur ainsi que des dialogues délectables et naturels bien qu'ils aient la perfection du construit. À voir absolument.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice — What an ass-kicking movie! — 10*/10

• Story: Riveting. It's bursting at the seams with action with a souped up little three way plot, good number of different sub-stories and strong emotional involvement.
• Ending: Solid.
• Characters: Great take on those classic characters, I especially love this incarnation of Wonder Woman. She's amazing. And I like this version of Alfred. Actually, the only one I find overly simple is Superman, but then, I've always found him rather insipid.
• Acting: Pretty good. Nothing to complain about.
• Known actors: Ben Affleck (the best Batman yet), Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg (very surprising role), Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot.
• Visuals: They will draw you in.
• Special Effects: Perfect.
• Costumes: Excellent, but why did they put such big breast on Wonder Woman's costume when the actress has actually smaller cups? It's annoying on a particularly good version of the character.
• Score: Astounding!

3D not worth it, but say yes to IMAX. I'm not surprised, considering the quality of the film, that Christopher Nolan is one of its executive producer.

Avatar — An astounding sci-fi masterpiece — 10*/10

• Scenario: James Cameron did it again. A smash hit, an almost perfect movie. The story is incredible, gripping, amazingly detailed and crafted with obvious genius. No aspect of this film is short of great.
• Known actors: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi and Joel David Moore.
• Visual & sound: Just spectacular. A perfection that will be difficult to match. Even the 3D was perfectly done, and I usually think it's just a gimmick, unnecessary.

I just watched it again for the second time and I can't believe it took me six years to do so. However, it might have been a good choice because I was able to see it on a very large TV with hi definition. The only way to pay tribute to this work of visual art. The only thing I could have wished for would have been a matching sound system. All the same, I'm in heaven right now.

The Revenant — A brilliant if harsh movie and a must see — 10*/10

• Scenario: Brutal and bloody, it's still an incredible film. The story keeps you riveted as the shit keeps piling up. The basic ideas are timeless, but this cinematic piece is unique. The end is superb, especially the last few seconds, no easy out. A brilliant masterpiece by Alejandro González Iñárritu, one more to add to his growing list.
• Known actors: Leonardo DiCaprio (once again, he shows what an incredible actor he is), Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson.
• Visual & sound: The vistas will astound you, the soundtrack will plunge deep into its emotional ravine, the camera shots will make you live every moment as if you were there.

Inception — A superb sci-fi of incredible proportions — 10*/10

• Scenario: Incredible setting with mind-blowing concepts. This story takes you on a roller-coaster ride of action and mental gymnastics. A perfect ending. A sci-fi master piece by Christopher Nolan.
• Known actors: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Tom Berenger, Marion Cotillard, Pete Postlethwaite and Michael Caine.
• Visual & sound: Absolutely astounding on both counts.

• Scenario: Tight and very interesting with great background science. You'll be riveted to your seat. Another masterpiece by Ridley Scott. I won't say more about this sci-fi, just go see it. You won't regret it.
