Back to the Future — A still enjoyable classic that marked a generation — 8*/10

• Overall: Fun, full of great details, funky sci-fi and a captivating story.
• Who is it for? Anyone who doesn't looking back.

• Style: A cool underdog adventure where sci-fi and time traveling play a background role to entertainment even though they're the main subjects.
• Pacing: Quick.
• Intro: Standard setup of places, characters and events.
• Story: A great adventure that has little moral value and a lot of exciting things happening. You can't help but be pulled in.
• Ending: Easy.
• Epilogue: The consequence of fudging with the past explained with a setup for the next chapter.
• Dialogs: Quick, fun, slick. Some are showing age a bit while still sounding good.
• Characters: This is a character-driven story, it's all about them, their quirks, motivations and actions, but they're stereotyped. Few of them have any depths, but they are all very interesting and well portrayed.
• Acting: Very good.
• Visuals: Great attention to details.
• Special Effects: Very few and only one showing its age.
• Costumes: A bit on the clean side, but that's 1985 for you.
• Music: Very entertaining.
• Score: Extremely lively and well set.
• Afterthoughts: 30 years later and I still enjoyed watching it. It might have lost some of its luster, we don't do things the same way anymore, but it still shines.

Legend — The old gold standard for fantasy movies — 9*/10

• Story: It's your basic heroic fairytale, lavishly heaped with all the magical dust that could be thrown at it at the time. Extremely enjoyable.
• Characters: Nice and simple.
• Dialogs: Very theatrical and well done.
• Scenario: Very quick development, even short. You can't get bored.
• Actors: Great performance by all. Cast members include Tim Curry, Tom Cruise and Mia Sara.
• Photography: Nice.
• Sound: Good music and score, fortunately not too 80s until the end credit.
• Special effects: Aging, unfortunately, but not too badly considering the era.

• Who is it for? Those who like a good fantasy movie and don't mind if it looks a little old.

This was for a long time the gold standard for fantasy movies, until TLOTR, and it still posses its magnificent aura. I consider it one of Ridley Scott's finest piece.

The Goonies - It's old but it's fun - 7*/10

The Goonies is the archetypal kid caper where everything is bigger than life, which means there's an overabundance of very fast dialogs, prototypical thin characters, and improbable events. That being said, it's a great adventure that aged relatively well with lots of action, fun and detailed sets.

Great for your kids or the kid in you.

The Breakfast Club — High school detention and colliding personalities on a Saturday — 10*/10

The Breakfast Club presents to us the five archetype of high school students. Every kid can find himself in those, if not in true form, by the mix of two of them. Even today, it holds true, if the lingo doesn't. I'm not talking about cliques, I'm talking about personality and acceptability.

This is John Hughes' master piece in term of analyzing the teenage mind. You're faced with what makes somebody cool, why you get rejected, the walls that are built between the groups, and how they are built, maintained. You get the different angst they face every day: from parental abuse to parental absence, from peer pressure to bullying, from delinquency to suicide.

Those very opposite characters are put together and confronted with each other's reality. As they argue, squabble, and fight, they never forget to form common cause against their oppressors.

There's nothing negative about this movie, it's just starting to date a bit, but not too much. Hughes did a great job to keep the 80s out of his film as much as possible. The only thing that can irk, is some bits of youth lingo which is now outdated. Fortunately, very little is used, and the rest is still current.

You have to see this, but keep in mind the release date and that it's all happening in the library. A single set.
